Context

Tuesday Evening - 28 September 1943 Dear Folks, I've kinda neglected writing you in the last few days. I got a letter off to Lilbern Roberts night before last, but I've owed him for a couple of weeks. Had a long, newsy letter from Mariella today, in answer to one I wrote her several weeks ago. She's still working at the Ration Board Office in Savannah. She's had quite a summer - she's really been doing a lot. She had a chance to go to Oklahoma City, so did, and visited Juanita Jones, a friend of hers at Lawton, while there. She also visited Fort Sill, saw the Will Rogers Memorial at Claremore, etc. Charlie got a furlough at the time, so she boarded The Rocket into Kansas City, in time to meet him there. She said Charlie's been shipped abroad, and his address is c/o the postmaster at San Francisco. --- She also spent part of her vacation up in Minnesota. Mom, your letter came last Saturday. My, but it had a lot of advice in it. Well, the watch matter is all cleared up. I again made my weekly pilgrimage to Wm. E. Phillips, Jewelers, and this time Mr. Koke had a new watch for me. It's exactly the same kind I had before, and seems to be just as good - in fact, it hasn't stopped yet. It's certainly good to have it back. That's one load off my mind. I hope I don't have any trouble with it. - Mr. Koke said my watch hadn't come back from New York yet. That's swell about the money for my furlough. I'd forgotten all about that money. I was just about ready to tell you to cash one or two of the bonds. When does Duane get a furlough? Olsen and I went into town again last weekend. I left some negatives at a drug store in Inglewood. We took the streetcar on into L.A., where I got my watch. We spent the night in Temple Israel, a free servicemen's dormitory across from Grauman's Chinese Theater. Sunday morning we went (hitchhiking) over to the Beverly Hills USO, then on to Westwood, where we went to the Ice Skating Rink there. My ankles just wobbled from side to side, and it was pretty hard on both our feet, so we left after about half an hour. We had Sunday breakfast at the Guild Canteen, and I really ate; cantaloupe, 2 glasses milk, 2 cups coffee, bowl of shredded wheat, and about 5 pieces of coffee cake. I'm up in study hall now. Listened to the record program from 6:15 - 7:15. Hanlin got another shipment today - from his aunt in Sioux City - so we feasted after supper this evening. If you have time, send my tennis racket (in it's press). We're going to start playing a tournament next Monday, and we're all supposed to send for our rackets. A lot of 'em have already come. I don't know what else to say, so guess I'll stop and study. Don't worry about me. Love, Bob
