October 6, 1943
Dear Mom and Pop,
What's happened to your letters? I haven't had any mail since sometime last week, and here the week's half over with. But I thought I'd write you anyway, just to let you know about me and everything. Bob Raidt said yesterday he'd finally decided to go home. I guess his folks wanted him to, but he doesn't seem particularly anxious to get back. He's gonna take the same train (Santa Fe) that Loyola is furnishing. - I mean he's taking advantage of the offer we have here. I believe Paul Leibowitz has cashed in his previously bought ticket, and is also going back on the Santa Fe. Raidt said something about he could get us a ride home from Kansas City, meaning his folks would meet us, I guess, like you said. I hope the money will be arriving soon - we have to have it by the 15th. The fare (round -trip) to Kansas City is $43.50.
We've been having more tests lately. We had a trig test the other day, on which I scored 78, which was fairly good, comparatively speaking. We had an algebra test today. Tomorrow we're having a a big geography test - I've really gotta study for it tonight. We had a huge chemistry test last Friday, which I think I flunked. I've flunked the last two physics tests, which is nothing out of the ordinary.
One good thing, though, I haven't received a single demerit yet, which leaves me with a fairly clean record. That is always considered when somebody is flunked out. You're much more apt to flunk out if you have some demerits.
You should see my hair now. I got it cut Monday night from our barber, who comes out here from Inglewood at 7 almost every night, and cuts hair in a room in the basement. He charges 55 cents. Anyway, I have a part no longer. It's no nice - easy to wash - and when I comb it I just run the towel (or comb) through it.
I wrote Kathleen a longer letter night before last. She's been pretty faithful about writing lately.
I don't have much to write about, and it's almost 7:30 - time for study hall from 7:30-9:30. Tonight's Wednesday night - so at 9:15 there'll be some form of entertainment in the auditorium - but it's usually pretty corney, and I have to study anyway. Besides, I've got my fatigues on now, and would have to change to OD's to go.
We're allowed to have piping on our hats again and we're also allowed to wear 9th Service Command patches on our sleeves. So I won't look so colorless when I come home, I hope.
Love and xxx's
