Description

Spokane Indians Children of the Sun is a full-length ethnohistory of the Spokanes of the Columbia Plateau, A Salish group. They entered written history with the arrival of explorers, fur traders, missionaries, and the army, with whom the Indians fought a brief bloody war. They courted the friendship of the newcomers until, buffeted by massive cultural changes, they were forced to resist and finally succumb to the tide of white encroachment. The last part of the book describes the tribe's settlement on the Spokane River and other reservations. It tells of the finding of uranium on Indian lands, and the belated efforts of government and private citizens to right the wrongs of the past. 346/Hardbound/Illustrations/Maps/Photographs
