Scope and Content

St. Joe to Frisco in Ten Day, 1935. This week the city observes the seventy-fifth anniversary of the establishment of the Pony Express, a communication system that became a major factor in the preservation of the Union. There is a picture of the monument in Patee Park. It was unveiled in 1912 as this picture from the newspaper's morgue reveals. Daughters of the American Revolution were responsible for the movement to perpetuate the memory of the remarkable enterprise, the story of which is so closely interwoven with the history of St. Joseph. Another picture is of 1923 when St. Joseph staged an elaborate celebration in tribute to the memory of the Pony Express and numerous communities along the old mail route joined in the program. The picture shows Pikes Peak stables and the original steamboat Denver that ferried the original riders across the Missouri River.
