The foundry covered the block from 4th to 5th, Cedar to Oak. It had been founded by Berry as Columbia Foundry & Machine Co. at 7th & Patee in the 1890s, and moved to the Cedar location in 1900 where it manufactured structural steel. In 1911, the name was changed to Berry Iron & Steel and was principally making castings for railroad parts under contract to Rock Island. In 1914, steel casting was added.
