Scope and Content
St. Joseph Missouri Proclamation 130th Anniversary of the Pony Express Mail Run, April 3, 1990. April 3, 1860 a crowd of well wishers gathered, a cannon boomed and Mayor Jeff M. Thompson slapped the rump of a pony, sending the first pony Express rider into the night. That adventurous enterprise established the mail system and secured forever our place in American history and Western folklore. Deputy Mayor Gerry Smith on behalf of and by virtue of the authority vested in Mayor Glenda Kelly, do hereby proclaim this day, April 3, 1990 as the 130th anniversary of the Pony Express Mail Run. The Board of Directors of the St. Joseph Museum and museum members and guests together point with pride to St. Joseph's pioneering past and strive toward an exciting future. This Proclamation was signed by Gerry Smith, and attested by Paula Heyde April 3, 1990.
