Description

St. Joseph Steam Ferry Boat Advertisement in Louisville Newspaper, 1854. Photo of newspaper advertisement. Ad directed at emigrants who expect to cross Missouri River on their way West in Louisville Weekly Journal, Feb. 22, 1854. Touts St. Joseph as a departure point and the St. Joe Road as the best route. "St. Joseph Steam Ferry Boat. Emigrants and others intending to cross the plains the ensuing spring are informed that St. Joseph afford greater inducements than any other place on the Missouri River. Besides its natural advantages, it is on the nearest and most direct route for the travel to the Pacific. The roads are good to and from this place. A splendid road is opened 100 feet wide from the river to the Bluff on the Nebraska side, making it dry at all seasons. The Ferry Company have been at the an expense of upwards of $6000 in procuring a good steamboat, fixing pastures for cattle, etc. The boat is large and capacious, can cross the river in five minutes, and carry each time 200 head of cattle, and at least 12 wagons. They have a large hall and commodious State Rooms the Boat, sufficient to accommodate 125 persons comfortably with boarding and lodging, which will be reserved for the emigrants. Emigrants and Travelers may rest assured they will meet with no detention or delay in crossing the river, but will find every accommodation at fair prices at cheaper or at least as cheap as any other place. The boat is now here at the landing and we can say confidently there is not as good a Ferry Boat on the Mo. River above St. Louis. Feb, 15, Wright, Williamson, & Co."
