Object: ceremonial pipe, Artist/Maker: Oceti Sakowin (Sioux) Title/Model: Catlinite Pipe with Wooden Quilled Stem, Date/Region: ca. 1950 / Northern Plains, Medium/Technique: hewn wood, feathers, and sewn quills / handmade, Edition/Series: unique, 1 of 1, Size: 2.75" H x 14" W x 1.5" D, Condition: good, Signature/Inscriptions: yes, carved on pipe bowl "Redwing", Exhibitions/Literature: March 13 - April 2000 at Campanella Gallery of Park University, Parkville, MO, Description/Notes: One-third of a wood pipe stem is decorated with multi-colored bands of quillwork. The beads are all pale and muted colors. The area which is covered in quills is slightly thinner and rounder. The quilling is placed so that the fingers do not need to touch the quilling. "Redwing" with the point and the tip of an arrow is scratched into the underside of the bowl.
