Property C46: Antler and Hoof Dance Stick Object: ceremonial dance stick, Artist/Maker: Plains, Title/Model: Hoof and Antler Dance Stick, Date/Region: ca. 1970 / Northern Plains, Medium/Technique: deer leg/hoof, wood, feather, red strapping, metal tacks, wood and glass beads, and bells /handmade, Edition/Series: unique, 1 of 1, Size: 54" H x 7.54" W x 18" D, Condition: good, Signature/Inscriptions: n/a, Exhibitions/Literature: n/a, Description/Notes: A hand carved four-point rack (dear antler) with dangling feathers, brass bells, beads of wood, glass and brass tops the staff. Red cloth binding is wrapped at the point the staff is attached to the antler. The two are secured with leather and old and new tacks. The same binding is covering the attachment of the deer hoof to the staff. Shaman often used the deer hoof staff or club. The deer often played a role in creation mythology and are believed to sacrifice themselves to feed the people, or are considered caretakers of the earth. The ceremonial staff does show age and use.
