The Civil War Extra, From the Pages of The Charleston Mercury & The New York Times is a compilation of front page Civil War news articles printed during from 1861 to 1865. The editors stated that they could not reproduce complete front pages, therefore, only included the most important news articles and editorials from each front page. The New York Times editorials did not originally appear on page one. They have been included in this book on redesigned pages. Also, the illustrations that appear under the Mercury banner and with Times editorials were not originally published by the newspapers, but have been added for the benefit of the reader.
