"Suck-e-ut or Thlingit dancing hat, worn by tribal chiefs and dancers only on great festival occasions. Is worn as a regular hat, top part being open, and when placed on the head, the intervening space between the feathers and top of head is filled with eagle feathers so that when the dancing is spirited, these small cut up eagle feathers, or down feathers, are strewing the air, making a general storm of feathers.
Hat is studded with a row of brightly hued feathers on the crest, the front board is carved with a representation of the Eagle, the eyes being inlaid abalone shell, as well as the inlay pattern around edge of mask proper. Back of hat consists of a cloth, covered with 30 ermine skins, well matched and in good condition. These hats are great heirlooms in native families.
