Fial--Image of Thlinget Indian, and was used during the early wars, image being fastened to the canoe on bow, and was in the lead of the fleet of canoes. Circle on tope of head was used to place swans down in, and as canoe went forward, swans down would fly all over native paddlers and beckon them on to success, th arm extended, forefinger, pointing the way.
During potlatch of 1905, which was held in Sitka, this image was brought out and placed on the leading canoe that went with the invitation to Chilcat, and also to Killisnoo. Nails were used then in fastening image to canoe. The swans-down was used as in the ancient times, but the down flew as the dove of peace. Cor. Vol. I, p. 237A"Collection
