"Fort Delaware, Md, March 15th, 1864
Last night my dream were full of pain, my visions were of blood
I fought my battles all again and mid dying soldiers stood.
My aching brain and bruised head brought horrors to my sleep
And gaping wounds and ghastly dead and bayonets thrust & sabers sweep came rushing through my brain.
each time the sentinel at the moat call "who come there", I woke
And find my pillow of my coat had caused my head to ache.
An uneven knot my temples pressed or twisted round my throat.
And rifles crack and cannons roar were but the echoes of my snore
And the sentinel's challenge at the moat.
But now kind friend this pillow soft will soothe this aching pain.
And visions of this horrid kind will never come again.
I'll dream all night of pleasant scenes and home with all its charms
My babes shall greet me with their smiles, my dear wife with her arms.
And wars and prisons shall be gone when ere I close my eyes
And dreams of peace shall only come and calm and sunlit skies
The storms may blow and lightnings flash and angry dash the billow
I'll dream of home and loved ones there and thank you for the pillow.
