Tlingit Indians -Results of a Trip to the Northwest Coast of America and the Bering Straits translate Aurel Krause's observations while on an expedition for the Geographical Society of Bremen in 1880-81. This is the principle source of their early culture. Their culture was developed during their days of isolation in southeastern Alaska and became one of the highest and most individualistic of American Indian cultures. One chapter gives a resume of the history of Alaska with reference to the Tlingit from the earliest Russian explorations to the purchase of the territory by the U.S. Because of the date of its writing and its comprehensive coverage, this book is almost unique in the literature of the nothern area of the Northwest Coast.
