To the Land of Gold and Wickedness is the 1848-59 diary of Lorena L. Hays. It is a memorable first-hand view of the 1853 emigration across a continent and the early days in the Mother Lode. The diary does much for the understanding of state and local history. Lorena's comments on education, religion, and town meetings in Illinois; her view of California and its infant communities, businesses and social institutions and her observances across the plains and mountains shed new light on some aspects of American culture between the Mexican and Civil Wars.
