Description

Tobacco and Smoking in Art was published in connection with an October 14 through December 4, 1960 exhibition of smoking artifacts collected and brought together by a number of people by the North Carolina Museum of Art. It was intended to "bring together a body of material which will demonstrate the impact that tobacco and smoking has had in the world of Art." The earliest items are "from the specialized field of anthropology with its divisions of archaeology and ethnology" from the American Indian culture as tobacco and smoking had its origins in America. Many of these prehistoric items were part of their religious and ceremonical life. Items in the catalog are divided into sections by the locations of the Indian tribes. 152/Softbound/Illustrations/Photographs.
