Trachoma Hospital, Rolla, Missouri, 1939. Designed by Eckel & Aldrich, Architects. Constructed 1938-1939 for Missouri State Board of Health. This was the last Trachoma Hospital to function in the United States, closing in the 1950's.
Trachoma is an infectious disease of the eye, transmitted mainly in families and prevalent especially in populations of Scotch-Irish descent. Large populations of such peoples had migrated over the "Daniel Boone Trails: to Kentucky, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas. It was also known among Native Americans and may have been endemic or brought by the Spaniards. It is also present in Mexican populations. Hence, the federal government operated beginning in 1913 special hospitals/clinics in 4 states, the last hospital being the one in this photo.
