Description

Vol I pg. 23X Letter from C.W. Goodman to A.A. Bear providing information about the tribes under his care and noting other individuals to contact in regards to baskets. It is on Department Of The Interior, United States Indian Service letterhead. It goes with letter Vol. I, pg. 23Y. Dear Sir: Answering your letter of March 19, 1909. I would say that (1) Indians of the Mohave tribe occupy the Colorado River reservation. Papagoes occupy the Gila Bend reservation, and Pima Indians live on the Gila River reservation. (2) The Mohave's are not known as basket makers, though they make some, principally for their own use. The Pimas and Papagoes make baskets. They are much the same except that the Pimas probably make more and finer ones than the Papagoes. (3) I think Mr Crouse, a post trader at Sacaton, Arizona, could furnish good Pima baskets at reasonable prices. Perhaps by writing to Rev. F. S. Herndon, a missionary among the Papago Indians, at Tucson, Arizona, one might be able to secure baskets. Very respectfully,
