Description

Uncle Nick Among the Shoshones; White Indian Boy Among the Shoshones (copy of original Manuscript). This is a typescript of the later published Uncle Nick Among the Shoshones. This is the story of Elijah Nicholas Wilson life as a white boy living with the Shoshone Indians. Don Reynolds evidently typed the first generation copy of Nick Wilson's memoirs in 1975 for Charley Wilson. Included is a letter from Nick Wilson's son Charley Wilson written to Don Reynolds. There is a photograph of Nick Wilson. The original manuscript is in the University of Utah Archives. This book was Charles Wilson's attempt to get his father's actual manuscript published, as opposed to the collaborative "White Indian Boy" published by Howard Driggs. Among the Shoshones is an autobiographical book that tells of the Elijah Nicholas Wilson's life with the Shoshones from the age of twelve. He fights, hunts for Buffalo, breaks in a colt or two, and he shares his horror at the Red Man's cruelty to enemies, especially the whites. He writes of the week-long dance (with 500 people at a time) which characterized a tribal meet of upwards of six thousand Indians. He also served as a Pony Express rider, and a driver for the Overland Stage. This book is unsurpassed as a wickiup's-eye view of Indian life, and a down-to-earth firsthand account of pioneer life in the Rocky Mountain area. This is part of the Don Reynolds Collection. 115/3-Ring Notebook/Typescript/Photographs
