Description

Up from the Sod is the life story of a Kansas prairie county. Rice county's first population were the native American Indians who first met the Spanish explorer, Coronado, They then had to deal with the Santa Fe Trail and the two Army outposts established within its borders to protect the travelers. The county set aside the main migration path of the buffalo from north to south , causing it to be the focal point of the slaughter of the beast by both red men and white. It became a crossroads of exploration, commerce, traffic and pioneering, It emerged from the sod to become the breadbasket of the nation and a strong link in its industrial life. 207/Hardbound/Illustrations/Maps/Photographs.
