Description

Vinyard Family Cherishes a Lincoln Love letter is a copy of a February 16, 1964 St. Joseph News press article. The subheading is, "Missive Was One of Three He Wrote Their Great-Grandmother." Abraham Lincoln met Mary Owens at the home of her sister, Mrs. Benjamin Abel of New Salem, Illinois and wrote her 3 letters. Mary Owens, however, was not impressed with Mr. Lincoln and turned him down and eventually married Jesse Vinyard of Kentucky. They settled on Pleasant Ridge in Platte County, Missouri. She was the great-grandmother of Benjamin R. Vinyard and Barkley Vineyard of St. Joseph and their brother, George Vinyard of Bellport, Long Island, New York. Ownership of the letters passed to Mary's daughter, Katie Vineyard Cunningham, us ultimately gave one to a nephew, the late J. J. Vineyard of Kansas City, and one to another nephew, the late George H. Vineyard of St. Joseph. The later letter was under framed glass at the Vineyard Construction Co. in St. Joseph at the time of this newspaper article in 1964. 1/Newspaper Photocopy/Photograph
