Wagons West - Trail Tales, 1848 developed out of requests that the author write articles for a newsletter. These journies west were nearly all wagon journies covering two thousand miles and required months of travel. Early pioneers were mostly white with a few free Blacks. Mountain Man Jim Beckwourth was an eminent example. Some slaves made the trip, but were set free when they reached California where slavery was illegal.
