St. Joseph Missouri News-Press August, 1986 has a color picture of William Washington being honored by state board as a Pioneer in Education. He said that integration was a lot smoother here than a lot of other places. What he did was a good job of talking to the students and parents and try to answer all of their questions. The smoothness of the process is greatly due to people like Washington, according to St. Joseph school officials, who nominated him for the award. Mr. Washington was also instrumental in moving the school libraries ahead and that he typifies the kind of educational commitment that a professional educator should have.
Washington was principal at Lincoln Elementary School, a school for black students, in 1954 when the federal government ordered integration of black and white students within public school districts. He had served as principal for 9 years and before that he was the librarian and taught math at Bartlett School, a black school for elementary and high school students. Following the integration process, Washington became the assistant librarian at the junior college and then the head librarian at Lafayette High School where he retired in 1974 because of the loss of his eyesight. He had been with the district for 28 years. Washington will be traveling to Jefferson City with several school district officials, where he will be honored during a dinner ceremony of the Annual Cooperative Conference for School Administrators.Collection
