West Ponies Take Over Mail in S. L., Salt Lake Tribune News Article, April 10, 1960. News story about change of riders in Salt Lake City during the Centennial rerun of the Pony Express. Byline: Jerry Veros.
Wilbert Reid a rider from Chillicothe, MO kicked his mount's ribs, horse hoofs stirred the dust and more than 100 persons cheered as he rode in. Then Jack Nolan Cluver City, CA took over the mail for the ride west--after a trailer ride through Salt Lake City
The time was Saturday 3 p.m. the event switch of responsibility from Midwest to western groups rerunning the Pony Express trail to mark the organization's 100th anniversary. Richard Chambers of St. Joseph MO the trail boss for the 72 man Midwest group from Iowa, Missouri and Kansas--that carried four mail pouches from St. Joseph to Salt Lake City told of modern trucks speeding along highways at breakneck speeds. The western group only had three riders. The shortage of riders was blamed on a dispute over who was officially designated to mark the Pony Express anniversary. They plan to ride night and day to do it in six days, he said.
The Californians will travel along Highway 40 in Utah and most of Nevada.
Lee Shifflett, Wathena KS. who dreamed up the rerun idea rode only a mile before the switch was made. Horse trailers carried the mounts ahead for future switches. The caravan left St. Joseph April 3 and averaged 200 miles a day, following highways as close to the original trail as possible. The group from St. Joseph included the Taylor County Sheriff's Posse from Bedford, Iowa.
