Description

Where the West Began, The Frontiers Long Gone, but St. Joe's Still a Good Place to Settle. Magazine article with color photos about St. Joseph in 1976. The author is a great great great grandson of Joseph Robidoux, a descendant of Ella Amanda Robidoux Sweney. daughter of Felix Robidoux. She is said to have told the author first-hand stories about St. Joseph and the Pony Express when he was a boy of 5. The article is written in the style of a letter to Joseph Robidoux telling him about the history and current enterprises in St. Joseph. The author is in St. Joseph in July, 1976 with his mother, staying at the Pony Express Motor Lodge. He hopes to see the St. Joseph leg of a transcontinental Pony race that had started in NY but bogged down and crumbled in Hannibal, Missouri. Meeting with Mildred Roundy and Sheridan Logan, he expresses his disappointment. Mildred tells him to show up at the Patee House the next morning. Overnight, Mildred enlists the Questers and other citizens in period dress to stage a Pony Express Ride expressly put on for the author with Davy Crockett, a descendant of the original, as the pony rider. The article is an engaging history of St. Joseph and includes color photos of: ----Pony Express Statue ---Davy Crockett's Pony Express re-enactment ---Jesse James home, when it was located on the Belt Highway ---Robidoux Row before renovation ---Buchanan County Courthouse, a white-painted structure ---Missouri Valley Trust Company interior with Mary Boder ---St. Charles Hotel Lobby, as set of Paper Moon movie ---Stetson Hat display at Stetson Hat Factory ---Women in period dress in front of Patee House holding Pony Express Ad for riders ---Photo of horse in front of Pony Express Stable doors being petted by a child 73/Magazine/Color Photographs
