Winterthur Museum and Gardens is a photographic booklet depicting the former private estate of Henry Francis du Pont, called Winterthur, located 6 miles from Wilmington, Delaware.
The home was first owned by James Antoine Bidermann, sone of one of the European investors in the black powder manufactory founded in 1802 by Eleuthere Irenee du Pont. Bidemann married du Pont's daughter. He called the estate Winterthur after the Bidermann's ancestral home in Switzerland.
The home build in 1938 is in the Greek revival style. It was altered extensively by Henry Algernon du Pont after his purchase in 1865. The last owner Henry F. du Pont tripled the size of the home as it is seen today.
This great country house on 950 acre estate, includes a museum of early American decorative arts displayed in period settings and informal gardens. The collection is rich in American furniture of the Queen Anne, Chippendale, and Federal periods.
Included are many beautiful, colored photographs of the home/museum and furnishings.
