Women in Waiting in the Western Movement. When, during the last half of the 19th century, thousands of men went west in search of gold. land or adventure, they left countless wives to handle family, farm and business affairs on their own. Many had no assistance from their spouse for years, sometimes never. Legal limitations on what women were able to do in discharge of debt, sale of real estate, and limitations as to availability of work for women outside the home created enormous challenges as women had children to feed and educate. Some even sent their earnings west to their husbands. The book is derived from letters and memoirs of women who experienced the wait.
