Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey. 1841-1867.Between 1840 and 1870, a quarter of a million Americans crossed the continental United States. This narrative is made of the diaries, reminiscences, and letters of 103 women, a random sample among the thousands of women who went West. These are the diaries of white women, many of them daughters of second and third generation American families. Some attempt is made to include the experiences of black women, many of whom went West as slaves.
