Context

PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR CHILDREN'S MENTALHEALTH SERVICES ST. JOSEPH, MO., MARCH 17, 1997 - The Department of Mental Health announced today that it will begin to implement plans to develop a comprehensive array of services and supports for seriously emotional disturbed children and youth in the St. Joseph area. The department's Division of Comprehensive Psychiatric Services (CPS) will work with local mental health service providers to develop in-home crises services, day treatment services, and specialized residential settings. The Division of CPS will continue to operate an acute inpatient program for seriously emotionally disturbed children and youth at the Woodson facility, while it explores whether there are appropriate alternatives for purchasing the needed acute inpatient care. The Division has also requested legislative authority to place the acute inpatient program under the administration of the new Northwest Missouri Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center. "We are committed to keeping the resources in the communities that have been served by the Woodson facility," said Dorn Schuffman, Director of the Division of CPS. "Development of these community services will enable the Division to prevent long-term out-of-home placements and serve more children." ##
