Worthington & Hook Family History, 1650-1930. Genealogy of the Worthington Family in America. Compiled by Frances Philips Conrad, whose mother, Martha Worthington Hook married William Philips. The Philips came to St. Joseph in 1869 when Rev. Philips became rector at Christ Episcopal Church. (Frances Philips later married into the Thomas Conrad family).
The Worthington Line is traced back to English aristocracy, including the Duke of Norfolk and Catherine Howard, herself.
Sarah Worthington, mother of Martha, came from a southern family who owned a Maryland plantation and were slaveholders. A newspaper illustration of the plantation house is included. Her portrait was painted by Rembrandt Peale, a photo of which is in the notebook. Her obituary, written by Rev. Philips, is included.
Thomas Hook (Capt.), Martha's father, was a soldier in the War of 1812 and served for many years in the Maryland legislature (Whig). He was personal friends with Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, who visited their home.
Biography of Martha Marcella Worthington Hook, includes her baptism into the Catholic Church. Also inserted is a tintype of Martha as an adult. (Also are others in the family named Marcella--her sister who died and her granddaughter Marcella Conrad).Collection
