The papers of Elliott E. Dent (1887-1974) in the J. Marshall Dent Family Papers date from around 1900 to 1914, spanning the years in which he played professional baseball, including with the Brooklyn Dodgers. The small collection includes a letter, postcards, news clippings, and photographs housed in one folder.
The collection contains a letter to Dent from his father J. Marshall Dent (1844-1929) written sometime before 1910, while Dent was living in Washington, D.C. Dent subsequently played for the Brooklyn Dodgers as a pitcher from 1909 to 1912. The only item dating from that period is a published account of the team’s 1912 season that features a team photograph and player statistics. The collection also includes postcards from family and friends sent to Dent while he played with the Atlanta Crackers in 1913. A group of photographs, 1900s-1910s, was likely intended to keep Dent connected to family, friends, and life in St. Mary’s County as he travelled.
The collection is arranged as:
• News account and clipping, 1912, 1914
• Letter from J. Marshall Dent, 190[?]
• Postcards, 1913
• Photographs, 1900s-1910sContext
