Scope and Content

1 folder ; Five sheets at 10"h x 12 7/8"w and one sheet at 10"h x 14"w. These were the blueprints for a small all masonry house to be built somewhere in Compton by St. Mary's Construction Company. In the post World War II era, there was a big demand for housing. Veterans could get low-interest loans for small houses and in St. Mary's County, masonry construction had considerable appeal. Homes were a long way from a fire station, so masonry, i.e. fire-proof, construction seemed like a particularly good idea. There are no personal names or dates on the plans. Sheet 1. Front elevation showing a screen porch with a center door and a pair of two light double hung windows in a bedroom. The house had a gable roof and another gable at right angles to the main roof. The chimney was to the right of center. The plan called for composition roof shingles and stucco on cinder block for the walls. Sheet 2. Side Elevation The gable roof had a long, gradual slope. The chimney was on the roof peak. There were four courses of asbestos shingles in the very peak of the gable end, with stucco over block for the rest of the wall. There was a louver right below the asbestos shingles. There were two screen panels in the front porch, a pair of two light double hung windows in the living area, a single two light double hung window in the kitchen and a single screen panel for the back porch. There were vents indicated near the ground, so there was only a crawl space, not a basement. Sheet 3. Rear Elevation There was a small screened back porch on the right, and a single two light double hung window on the left. The plan called for composition roof shingles and stucco on cinder block for the walls. Sheet 4. Side Elevation This showed a single two light double hung window on the right, presumably for a bedroom, a small two light double hung window for a bathroom in the center and a larger two light double hung window on the right for another bedroom. The previously mentioned arrangement of asbestos shingles and a louver is on this gable peak also. Sheet 5. Foundation This is the first time dimensions have been shown. The largest area, the kitchen and living room is 30' 11" by 12' 18." The bedroom and bath area is 12' 18" by 26' 10 1/2." There are small drawings for the joists. Sheet 6. First Floor Plan This might better be called Floor Plan, since there is no way to get to a second floor or even an attic. The two small bedrooms are separated by a small bathroom. The grate for the floor heater is in the hall between the three rooms. The living room was good sized, but there was no specific space for a dining table. The kitchen was small and very poorly arranged, with almost no counter space.
