Scope and Content

The Abell family photographs collection consists largely of a photograph album, likely from the family of Corinne Dyer Abell (1848-1936) and Charles Abell (1851-1923). The album came to the historical society through Charles and Corinne Abell's grandson Charles Ethelbert ("Bert") Abell (1926-2013) and family member Enoch B. Abell. Also included in the collection are digital scans of a series of aerial photographs of St. Mary's County, taken in 1934 possibly by Aloysius King, editor of the St. Mary's Beacon. Dated items in the largely undated collection span the years 1864-1934, with the bulk of them dating from 1893 to 1934. The names referenced in the Abell family photograph album include Corinne Dyer Abell, Frank Abell, Judge Benjamin Harris Camalier (1849-1936), Mary Catherine ("Molly") Abell Camalier (1854-1886), Annie Louise Dyer, Gough family, Mary Jenkins, and Mary Theresa Norris. The album also includes photographs of Georgetown University student athletes in baseball, crew, football, and track. Miscellaneous items include a greeting card, a newspaper clipping, and a religious prayer card. The album is padded and adorned with metal flowers, metal closing clip attached. The digital copies of aerial photographs, taken from a plane in 1934, include views of several historic homes, including Portobello, West St. Mary's Manor, and Deep Falls; St. Mary's Female Seminary and Church Point; and German troopships mothballed in the Patuxant River. The original prints are owned by Historic St. Mary's City, which loaned them to the St, Mary's County Historical Society for scanning.
