Scope and Content

39 sheets ; 14"h x 8 1/2"w Photocopy of pages with text only, plus copies of two small loose sheets. This book has a dark brown paper cover with a design of diagonally flowing lines with yellow dots between them, giving the effect of paramecia swimming upstream. 3 1/8" down from the top and 1 1/2" from the right edge is a 2 3/8"h x 4 1/2"w light brown label pasted on the cover with "Account book St. Joseph's church Pew rents from 1871-[something illegible]" written on it in black ink. The upper and lower right corners are reinforced with dark brown, almost black leather. The spine was also black leather, but the front cover has completely broken away and the back cover is hanging on by two threads. There is no text on the spine. Someone used tape in three places to keep the book together. On the front cover, a swath of brown paint about an inch wide runs at a slight angle from the spine at the top left corner to just outside the spine reinforcement on the bottom edge. All the edges of both covers are severely scrubbed and much of the colored paper has come off the back cover. The cover p. 2 has been used as a blotter and has a little figuring in pencil. Cover p. 3 has an ink entry of "Cash on Hand" and then considerable pencil writing and some figuring, but it has been deliberately rendered illegible by looping brown ink lines. There is a small loose sheet of blue lined paper inside the cover with pencil calculations on one side. At the top of the first page, someone was practicing writing the letter "Q," admittedly a difficult task. Six sheets with alphabet tabs were provided by the book's creator, but they were not used by Mr. Mattingly. At the head of an unnumbered page "Account of Moneys received and expended by George S. Mattingly, Register and Treasurer of St. Joseph's Congregation commencing January 1, 1871" The accounting begins on that page. On numbered page 14, about halfway down the Receipts column, someone has outlined "6.50," collection of the church tax, in pencil. This was probably done by a later researcher, not in 1874. Beginning on numbered page 16 in 1875, it appears that only the "colored" pew rents were recorded and that money seemed to pay all the expenses--whatever came in went to Father Paccarini's salary or to John Parsons. On numbered page 17, the entries cease after six lines and then pick up again on numbered page 18 in rather different handwriting, especially beginning in the middle of the page. The record continues to numbered page 19, but numbered pages 20-29 have been torn out. The handwriting and style of entry changes dramatically on numbered page 19 also. Numbered pages 30-44 are blank and were not copied. A small piece of buff paper between pages 45 and 46 dated November 30, 1875 is a receipt for $10, I think--it is difficult to tell. The fragment was torn from a larger sheet that had more text. Pages 45 and 46 were copied to give some context to the inserted fragment. Numbered pages 47-105 are entirely blank and were not copied. The unnumbered back page has a statement about the absence of an entry in the book at the time of the death of George Mattingly in August 1874, but Ignatius Mattingly, a relative? son?, was able to explain the discrepancy to the satisfaction of the trustees.
