Sepia tone 8"h x 14"w photo of an African-American Army unit. There are sixty-five men in the photo in four rows on risers and one lone man as the top row. The group is in the tall pines, so one could suspect a fort in the south. Four of the officers in the front row are white and one is African-American. Judging by the insignia on the officers, this was an engineering unit. Some of the men have their arms in position to see their patches and there were several sergeants, even master sergeants, so this is not a mustering-in photo. Notice a man in the top row, between the center and right edge, has both his hands on the shoulder of the man in front of him. One man in the top row left has a pipe in his teeth. The photo had been rolled for years and has cracked vertically in eleven places, so there is some loss, but not too much. Sadly, there is no identification of any of the men. An accompanying note said the photo came from the files of All Saints Episcopal Church in Oakley in the seventh district. A scan of the photo was included, but it has some reflective areas that obscure faces.
