African-American servant of the Briscoe Family at SotterleyEntry/Object ID
2017.009.0002Description
One 8 1/2"h x 11"w copy of a sepia tone photograph of a Briscoe family African-American servant, sadly, not named. She was seated in a rustic wooden chair on the big front porch. She looked to her right and had her hands crossed in her lap. Her hair was close cut and mostly covered by a white cap with a small ruffle around the edge. She had a round face, a rather broad nose and a thin smile. She wore a high-necked dress with alternating bands of dark and light material running vertically. The light bands had pencil thin dark stripes that were easy to see in the long sleeves. The sleeves had deep cuffs. Over the bodice she wore a white pinafore; her apron was light colored with tiny dots overall. It is a lovely portrait. African-Americans were seldom photographed at all, let alone so nicely.
