Carte-de-visite in sepia tones 3 11/16"h x 2 1/2"w of Alethea G[reenwell] Spalding. This is a "head shot" only. Mrs. Spalding is looking to the right of the camera . She has dark hair firmly parted in the middle, a bun in the back and a knot of hair near the top and forward of each ear. [These were sometimes called "rats."] Her face is rather heavily lined, and since she is not smiling, looks quite sad. There is a dark shadow behind her to frame her face. The pupil of her left eye is rather farther to the right than one might expect, but that may be because of a smudge in the picture. She has on a small plain white collar and a dark dress with sizable covered buttons down the middle of the bodice. There may be sewn-in pleats in the bodice as well. The photo is pasted on a warm beige card base with a very narrow brown "frame" around the photo. There is no studio or photographer information on the piece. Mr. Fenwick has written on the bottom of the photo in blue ball point and on the verso someone else wrote the name in pencil.
This piece was in the upper left corner of page 2 of the dark red photograph album.Collection
