This 62 leaf book was probably published in 2001 or 2002; there is no date on it anywhere. No one edited the manuscript, which is unfortunate. There is a brief discussion of public health in general, its development as a discipline in Maryland, four chronological chapters on its development in our county, a brief conclusion, bibliographical references, and endnotes. Disease information, vital statistics, management of infectious diseases, and maternal and child health are all part of the task of the health department. The first County Board of Health was organized in 1886. Dr. F. F. Greenwell was the part-time health officer, followed by Dr. Thomas Lynch, followed by Dr. F. S. Camalier. Dr. David T. Bowden was the first full-time officer. The health situation in the county slowly improved, but when the base construction began, conditions went downhill rapidly because of the huge influx of people and inadequate infrastructure. Conditions slowly improved again as the population increase was absorbed. The kinds of diseases encountered by the department changed significantly over the years, as did the entire system for the provision of health care. The current department emphasizes education and prevention and manages many of the regulations associated with food and sanitation.
