Description

Applique quilt in red and green on a white cotton ground with a white cotton back. 100" by 102" The quilt has nine motifs of the same design and all but one in the same cotton fabric, each done by a different woman. The border is on rectangular pieces of white cotton around the entire quilt. Acid green white polka dot fabric was used to make a trailing grape vine on the border, with alternating three lobed leaves and a narrow stem with a bunch of alternating cherry red circles to represent ripe grapes and green circles to represent unripe grapes. Most of tthe grape bunches consisted of nine appliqued 1/2" circles. The primary motif was in cherry red with acid green stems and leaves . The center of the motif was a 6 3/4" x 6 3/4" red blob with four lobes facing north, south, east, and west. Each lobe supported an acid green stem and each stem had one pointed oval leaf on each side. The stem supported a cherry red flower that looked like a tulip. Each motif was about 23" x 23". Eight of the motifs were the same in pattern and material, but the ninth, in a corner, had the same pattern but slightly different material. The red material included very tiny yellow leaves and the green material was more blue green. There's a story there. Each motif is signed in black. Each motif is on a square piece of material, but laid out on a diamond. Triangles were used to fill in around the squares. There is quilting all over the piece, mostly in white. There is very little batting left and I am not sure there was much in the beginning. The quilt has seen considerable use. There are many stains of yellow and brown. All but two motifs have substantial areas of fabric loss or shredding.
