Hope photocopied two entries from the Archives of Maryland Vol. 3 - Proceedings of the Council of Maryland (1636-1667). The first entry is from page 272 and it details Capt. Nicholas Guyther becoming sheriff and the expectations that came from the position. One was expected to collect taxes, rents, other money related things owed to the governor. A sheriff also was given the duty of issuing court summons. Capt. Nicholas Guyther had been elected on April 22, 1652.
The second entry she photocopied is from page 357 and it is about one incident in particular that he was involved in. Capt. Nicholas Guyther was tasked with collecting a Thomas Gerrard Esq. who had been drinking heavily onboard a ship. He was to take Mr. Gerrard before the appropriate council to determine his fate as he had been besmirching the reputation of the council and several other men.Collection
