Description

One of eight cannons from one of the ships Ark or Dove that transported the first European settlers to Maryland in 1633 Scholarship suggests that it or other cannons like it were used to outfit the Ark for defense in its journey across the Atlantic, though this is not certain The cannons were moved to various forts that the St. Mary's setters built during the 17th century. However, at the beginning of the 18th century, the cannons along with the rest of their home, St. Inigo's Fort, fell into the river due to shoreline erosion. The cannons were lost until 1824, when Father Joseph Carberry of the St. Indigo's Parish recovered seven of the guns, and used the three more poorly preserved guns as a boundary marker between the property of St. Indigo's Manor and neighboring Cross Manor. One of the cannon used as a boundary marker was donated to the Historical Society under the condition that its time located at St. Indigo's Manor is indicated on any present and future plaque.
