Description

This is an older child's atlas with a cover title of "Cornell's companion atlas to Cornell's high school geography" published by D. Appleton & Co. in New York. The title page has been ripped out and the next page is nearly all gone, but the dates on the individual map pages are 1855 and 1856. The book has a cardboard cover with a light toast background and a black cloth spine. The front cover has an elaborate "frame" around two globes showing the eastern and western hemispheres and the title in Victorian, heavily decorated letters. The back cover has the seals of the United States and all the states at that time, plus two vertical rectangles with lists of textbooks by the same company. On the inside back cover, Cora Dunbar has written her name in confident script. The name of Simmes Fenwick is written in pencil, and Fenwick was the person Cora Dunbar eventually married. Also on the inside back cover is the name of Nannie Fenwick. Cora Dunbar's name is also at the top of the inside front cover and Nell Fenwick wrote her name right in the middle of the space, first in pencil and then over it in ink . Nell added a date--"April 8, 1873." There are eighteen unnumbered map pages and two pages of information at the end. Most of the maps have a little color in them. There is a page of small boxes showing the principal cities of the United States; St. Louis is the most western municipality. Railroads are prominently featured in the maps.
