7 3/16"h x 14 5/8"w black and white photographic reproduction on foam core board of a bank note from the National Bank of Mechanicsville, Maryland. This was during the time when local banks could issue notes that were secured by deposits the bank made in the United States Treasury. The piece was national currency, a five dollar note issued on April 17, 1909. It had an elaborate "frame," cartouches in all the corners, a portrait of Benjamin Harrison on one side, and various print fonts and flourishes to make it difficult to counterfeit. Dr. Guyther used this piece in one of his earliest programs about the northern part of the county.
