Scope and Content

The Barbara Lawrence Photographs and Oral History collection contains photographs, largely of Tudor Hall, a historic house in Leonardtown, MD, that houses the St. Mary's County Historical Society, and an oral history interview with waterman and businessman Samuel Matthew ("Captain Sam") Bailey. Collection items span the years 1935-2012, with the bulk of material dating from 2003 to 2012. Barbara Lawrence’s Tudor Hall photographs focus primarily on the building's exterior and grounds, and depict in part renovations and repairs to the building in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Also included are large aerial photographs of Tudor Hall and its surrounding area in Leonardtown from the 1930s and 1940s. Other photographs are of the James Adams Floating Theatre, likely from the 1930s; St. Mary's County Historical Society's board of directors, board president, administrator, and volunteers in 2003-2004; and a boat owned by Samuel Matthew ("Captain Sam") Bailey. A cassette audio recording of an oral history interview with Captain Sam Bailey conducted by Michael H. Humphries, director the St. Clement's Island Museum, Coltons Point, MD, in 1979 completes the collection. The collection is arranged in the following groupings: 02.
