Bathing beach 1Entry/Object ID
2001.001.0002Description
The front of this postcard is a sepia-toned photograph of a group of adults and children bathing in what appears to be a tidal river. The location is not identified, but since it is with other cards of Saint Mary's County, it is likely to be a Saint Mary's County scene as well. The river is heavily wooded on both sides and the closest shore rises up to possibly 20-30 feet. Those in bathing dress are seated in the shallow water, while others, fully clothed, are standing on the drier sand. The male bathers have dark short sleeved shirts and dark shorts on--many with white trim. Two young women have on dark outfits with long sleeves and pants that would appear to come to their knees if they were standing. Most of the men on dry land appear to be wearing straw hats and dark suits. There are two girls standing very close to the water in light dresses that come to their knees and they have black stockings. These young ladies are hatless, but other children farther back on the strand have hats. There is one adult woman visible; she has on a full length skirt, a light colored shirtwaist, and she may have a hat on. On the address side of the card, small type says this card is part of the "Anglo life series." The card is bisected by a black line slightly left of center, with the left side for correspondence and the right for address only. This card was never used.Collection
