Benjamin H. Duke in the Spanish-American WarEntry/Object ID
2010.002.0022Description
2 3/8"h x 3 1/2"w sepia tone photo of Benjamin H. Duke and six comrades during the Spanish-American War. The young men are posed in two rows, one group of four kneeling in front and three standing in the back. They are in uniform, but without jackets. They are in front of a two story ramshackle building. Mr. Duke is not specifically identified; my guess is the dark-haired man in the upper right. On June 22, 1898, at the age of 19, Mr. Duke enlisted in the 1st Maryland Regiment and was assigned to Company I. The regiment was stationed at Camp Wilmer, Maryland, Fort Monroe, Virginia, Camp Meade in Pennsylvania, and Augusta, Georgia. He was mustered out in Georgia on February 23, 1899 without participating in any fighting.
