Scope and Content

1 folder ; 9 5/8" x 11 7/8" Bessie Payne researched old homes in Saint Mary's County. She appeared to have started a research paper for a college course, but never finished it. She continued to collect snippets of information about old houses throughout her life. A niece, Jeanne Payne Murphy, later typed up the raw information and gave both versions to the Society. No date Original paper was 67 three hole punched sheets, typed, but heavily hand annotated. Lined "school" pages are inserted in some places, with handwritten information. Includes photos of some buildings, hand drawn floor plans, some clippings pasted in, and maps. A snapshot labeled "Westbury" is in the pages, but there is no description of the house. There is also a photo of Bushwood across from a description of Basford manor. Table of Contents: Characteristics of early manors, Architectural analysis of houses, Names of manors, Locations of manors, Pictures of locations of manors, map of Saint Mary's County showing manors, Description of manor houses with ca. 45 houses or properties listed, but not all properties have descriptions. After the paper, there was a copy of a long Chronicles article about Thomas Gerard and six sheets with newspaper photos of various county buildings and a hand drawn map of Baltimore in 1729.
