The document is an original bill of sale from 03 October 1804 for Charles, an enslaved man, who was the property of James Kirk of St. Mary’s County. Kirk was selling Charles to Thomas Weatherton, also of St. Mary's County, Maryland

State of Maryland
Know all men by these presents
that I James Kirk of Saint Marys County for and
in consideration of the sum of Two Hundred and
Twenty Dollars Current money to me in hand paid
by Thomas Weatherton of the Same County the rece
ipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have Bargain
ed and Sold, and by these presents do Bargain and
Sell unto him the said Thomas Weatherton one
negro man named Charles, and the said Jam
es Kirk for myself my heirs executors and admi
nistrators, will warrant, and by these presents
Defend unto the said Thomas Weatherton his heirs
or assigns the said nego man named Charles to
him and his heirs forever in testimoney
whereof I have Set my hand and Seal
this Third day of October Eighteen Hund
