John F. Dent served as the 4th election district tax collector from 1848-1851. Mr. Dent collected local taxes and state taxes and received a small salary for doing that. The road supervisor submitted bills for labor on the public roads. Small pensions were authorized for individuals, but the money was usually paid to a third party. These folders have dozens of small pieces of paper certifying that someone was entitled to the payment of small sums for road construction, jury duty, serving as a witness, doing an autopsy, or otherwise serving the public good. Later folders include accounts for the management of funds belonging to persons for whom Mr. Dent served as guardian. There are several folders of Mr. Dent's personal accounts, as well. Mr. Dent served as an executor of many estates and as guardian for several children. There are extensive records of expenses, court reports, debt collection, etc.Collection
