Scope and Content

1 folder ; 14 3/4" w x 9 5/8" h Folder 000158. Pieces 1411-1430 This folder has several sheets of John F. Dent's store account with J. L. Lancaster and a few communications with W. A. Padgett & Co. There is an accounting sheet for someone showing his cash in hand to be $135 on January 1, 1871, that he earned $386.35 during the year, had expenses of $373.05, and had $13.30 left over on January 1, 1872. Z. D. Blakistone promised to pay J. L. Lancaster at least half the value of his crop of tobacco and if it sold well enough, he might be able to pay off his entire debt. In 1873, Mr. Dent sent several documents to J. F. King at the Beacon about the political situation in 1864. There is a sheet listing Dent's tax bills for 1874-1877. An elaborate multi-page form was filed by J. L. Lancaster to protest the failure of National Mechanics' Bank to pay a bank draft. A small bill at the back of the folder refers to the estate of J. L. Lancaster.
